I teach 15+ students with varying special needs in the mountains of south eastern Kentucky. In my classroom, not only do we focus on academics, but we also talk about our feelings. We talk about how we maintain appropriate conversation. We practice good manners and how we should talk to one another. We also learn about strategies to help us calm down when we are feeling stressed, anxious, or overall just crummy. With more than half of the school population coming from low income households, many students need extra support from their teachers and the resources provided by the school or community. For example, free or reduced lunch or local food banks. I want my students to come to school knowing that they will be cared for and loved. As we all know, some students come to school to learn, but others may come to be loved.
