As a new chemistry teacher, I have been working hard to increase the rigor of the chemistry curriculum and, in doing so, have found that I need to spend some of my instructional time getting the students familiar with using more than just the basic functions on calculators. Some of my students bring calculators to class, but many of them bring calculators with only the basic arithmetic functions. The students are currently becoming familiar with scientific notation and are about to start a unit on rates of reaction and molar concentrations in which they will need to use exponents in most of their calculations. I would like to start building a calculator collection for my classroom, so that we have calculators available on a consistent basis as we cover more advanced math in the second semester of chemistry. Sometimes I am able to supplement the few scientific calculators that the students bring to class by borrowing calculators from the math classrooms, but these are not always available. It has been very difficult to help my students master advanced skills without an adequate number of scientific calculators. I chose the TI-84 CE Plus because it has the functions needed to master advanced math for chemistry and for the SAT and ACT. I have started an SAT class after school and I want to give the students access to a calculator that will make them competitive on the math sections of these tests.
