My goal is to accelerate student learning of reading and writing in Spanish, by tailoring instruction to meet their individual needs. We adapt the English letter sets and create Spanish magnetic, color-coded letters with Spanish accented vowels and the Spanish consonant characters of ch, ll, ñ and rr. This will give our students opportunities to build their knowledge of all the sounds and letters of the Spanish language. In guided reading groups, students will use these sets of letters to learn that text is broken into small units. They will learn letter sounds, syllables and word patterns. My beginning readers need Spanish letters to touch and feel the difference in each letter. We will use books (that reflect the learners in my classroom), to practice their emerging decoding skills. This work is foundational to developing avid readers. We also practice writing and forming the letters the correct way to build fine motor skills and confidence in writing!
