It's important for my ENL students to access the same content as their native English Speaking peers and so having the graphic novel version of Shakespeare's classic, Romeo and Juliet, will allow them to visualize what they read. A movie may be helpful for visualization as well but my students also need to practice reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and fluency through the process of reading. Research shows graphic novels in an ENL classroom contribute to a better understanding of content. And I also want my students to enjoy this classic and not feel deterred by the confusing nature of the Shakespearean language. I know that they will love this beautifully illustrated and racially diverse adaptation.
