First grade students love to move around while they work. My goal is to give mine an area where they are able to wiggle and wobble as much as they'd like! When my students start their centers and other classwork, they are able to go around the classroom to the spot of their choice. However, my classroom only has regular chairs and tables as options for my kids to sit. First graders need options to move while they work to help their brains work, too! Allowing students to move will help their brains focus on their tasks at hand. I have seen a difference in other classes where students have the choice to do their work anywhere; the students are more inclined to finish their work without disrupting others, and even be more on task when they are able to move their bodies while they finish classwork! Storage in my classroom will also benefit the students because they will be placed in areas for the students to have easy access to them throughout the day. Students use manipulatives on a daily basis and some are kept on high shelves due to lack of storage space. These bins will help tremendously make my classroom more inviting for the kids, and allow the students to have a sense of ownership of the items in the room.
