My students connect with drumming. Percussion techniques engage the brain on many levels: creatively, mathematically, and social-emotionally. When drumming as an ensemble, my students learn how to cooperate with their classmates in a way they don't typically get to experience in their regular classroom: the goal is to collaborate with their peers to create something beautiful and musical. The more tubano drums we have, the more students we can have actively engaged in playing at the same time. We currently have enough drums for students in groups of three or four to share one drum. My goal is to ultimately have a student to drum ratio of two-to-one.
