This class set of Cory Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom will provide important context to my students as we study crypto-currency. In this end of year unit, my English students will study crypto-currency through non fiction text as well as this fictional novel in order to apply their understanding to an experiential, research-based project. In the project, I will ask them to use the same type of decentralized logic that crypto-currency is based on in order to create a school-wide system that will improve access to programs and academics as well as improve discipline and mental health. The use of this novel is an integral part of helping my students to understand the human and ethical implications of a "bitcoin" type of system.
