Our school is in a large urban district. In addition to poverty, our students have come from over 30 countries and speak many different languages. Many of the families in our community do not have the resources at home to read with their children. We are creating a lending library where families can stop outside our school and find culturally relevant books to read together. Not only will the library encourage parents to read with their children, but hopefully it will encourage our parents to become more involved with our school. The donations in this project will give students the opportunity to read books with their families that appreciate the diversity within our school. Research proves that when students read culturally-relevant books they are more likely to want to read. Thus, their intrinsic motivation will enhance their ability to learn to read. In addition, students who are able to read bilingually are more likely to graduate from college than ESL students who are only taught to read English.
