The majority of our families have little expendable income. Many students eat their meals at our school. A school supply list is sent home in the summer, but expendable income is extremely limited. Therefore, asking families to purchase earbuds seems unreasonable to me. While some can, many cannot. If we distribute the same equipment to every child in our school, the ability to buy is replaced with the ability to try. I am not comfortable with some students having access that others do not - due to financial circumstances. Whether used for taking a state-required test, listening to a story in the child's secondary language, or listening to a book from the library beyond his/her independent reading level, all of the students can benefit from this option!
