In my classroom, our students are very sensory driven. In order to help each student reach his or her greatest potential, it is important that the students have materials they need to reach their goals. By implementing a sensory diet in the classroom with the products I've chosen, students have the ability to grow and explore the world around them through different sources, as well as have a calm area where they can let out their frustrations and anxieties. By incorporating sensory play into the classroom, it helps students remain focused on what they are learning in a calm, peaceful environment. With sensory objects, students will be able to take frequent breaks from work in order to fulfill their needs for sensory and tactile learning. As research states, individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder benefit greatly from all learning modalities and having sensory items plays into that. These sensory items that I have requested for my classroom will help my students self-regulate their emotions and therefore will be ready to learn. It also adds an element of surprise to the classroom. We can fill the sensory table with various materials that pertain to almost anything we are learning in school.
