Pre-K is always an adjustment for students and can sometimes be overwhelming, especially at the beginning of the year. Students are learning how to be in school, different routines, different faces, words, names, etc. It is in this new environment, oftentimes a child's first experience of school, that students need additional supports to help them concentrate and interact with their new surroundings fully. Having a classroom that is sensitive to students' sensory needs will help them adjust to their new routines while also keep them engaged and motivated to learn and interact with their peers throughout the year. Students may need to sit with a weighted pillow when they are feeling anxious or they may need to squeeze a squishy mat filled with different colors in order to calm themselves down from an upsetting interaction with a peer. Soothing lighting and muted colorful images can also help students have a relaxed rest time.
