There are 43 different languages spoken in the public middle school I teach in. Over 60% of our students are on free and reduced lunch, and most of my students find our school to be the safest place in their lives. My students are caring, compassionate kids who look out for one another. In a neighborhood of drugs and gangs, I am constantly amazed that these students are not only able to get themselves to school everyday, but that they really want to be here. Students ask me everyday if they can stay after school. They ask to eat lunch in my room, and I think if I was here over the weekends, they would come in, too! My middle school students are at such an impressionable age in their lives, and creating a safe, comfortable learning environment is an essential component to a successful education for them.
