Every semester, the freshmen I teach choose an independent reading book to read alongside the book we're reading in class. Since the school does not provide these, families need to buy them. Although students can also use the library, unfortunately we do not have a library in our school - or a library near our school. This means that many students struggle to get their hands on a book and complete the assignment successfully. This project means I can give books away to students who otherwise would not have one. It will also allow students to have a choice, rather than having to read the one available at the library. When students have choice, it may be easier for them to tap into their intrinsic motivation in order to complete a cumulative project which requires researching their book, as well as comparing it to others we have read this year. If I can give books to students who need them most, not only will they be able to complete this important assignment, but they may discover what Stephen King calls books' "uniquely portable magic."
