Access to calculators helps remediate learning gaps for my students who did not have a math teacher for two grade levels. Utilizing calculators frees my students from worrying about basic computation errors so that they can focus on learning new, complex mathematical concepts. This will ultimately help them close the achievement gap, and have access to grade-level learning standards. Many of my students are visual learners, and not being able to visualize the math they are learning about with concrete models significantly impacted their understanding this school year. A document camera will provide increased opportunity for modeling abstract mathematical concepts, thus allowing my students to visualize the math they are learning. This visualization will improve access to grade-level learning standards for all students, and increase student mastery. Unfortunately, many of my student's families are unable to afford purchasing each of their student's a calculator, and my school's resource budget is stretched to its limits. My students have already demonstrated incredible resilience and growth in spite of limited resources and incredible poverty, and this project will assist them in their quest to combat economic inequality and close the achievement gap in the Mississippi Delta!
