Our library needs graphic novels to motivate our reluctant readers to read and to spark excitement about literacy for all students! We have a small graphic novel section in our library but it is in dire need of new material. Students who struggle with reading often gravitate to these books due to the illustrations, which are less intimidating than pages full of nothing but words. Further, many middle school students prefer graphic novels due to the format and colors. Students must read to be academically successful, thereby necessitating the need for the types of books they are most likely to peruse. After surveying our students and observing circulation trends in the library, I learned our reluctant readers are hungry for more graphic novels. Research shows that graphic novels are a gateway to more advanced novels. Further, the layout of these books cultivates higher order thinking skills. In particular, students enjoy graphic novels with stories about kids their own age and super heroes. Additionally our 6th grade students are required to read The Lightning Thief, which most enjoy, so they devour anything about gods and goddesses. All of these types of graphic novels are listed on my wish list. By providing for this project, your donation will enjoy longevity in our library, serving a multitude of students for many years to come. Thank you in advance for helping to inspire excitement about literacy and for furthering our students' academic success.
