I believe that using LEGOs in my gifted classroom could greatly enhance student learning. Studies have shown that being physically engaged before, during, or after learning helps the brain retain the information better. By using LEGO education I can provide hands-on learning in an effective way that teach all level skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication which are life skills my students need to be prepared for their future-whether that is college, a technical trade school, the work force, or the armed forces. The students will use the LEGOs to design and build programmable robots using motors, sensors, gears, and wheel and axles. WeDo is based on constructivism which is an educational theory that states that children learn best when they experience things firsthand and within a meaningful context. The curriculum, which is aligned to national standards, engages students to become more independent learners. Additionally, WeDo Software introduces students to basic programming skills that allow them to create movement in robots and program sensors to take in information. The use of LEGO bricks helps students overcome difficulties and persevere when a first attempt does not work. Students stay motivated to continue to try and learn rather than give up. Through this curriculum, students will learn how to program, design, and create working models that represent machines or machine components used in real life.
