Our fourth grade class plans to be writing both informational and opinion pieces the second half of this school year. This aligns with the fourth grade Iowa Core for Writing Standards; Research and persuasive/informational writing using NF resources. The Scholastic Magazines are a huge benefit for all learners in that it aligns with the Core Standards and involves current issues in the world using an interactive resource. The debate section and videos are very informative and engaging. Students are intrigued and excited to read the articles in the Scholastic News-4. It touches on various topics from sports to natural disasters, to movies, to animals. The literacy skills highlighted in the magazines are the standards taught in fourth grade: author's purpose, summarizing, and main idea. Students can actually highlight and write on the paper copies, a very good plus for young learners. The end page includes a great comprehension check that students can answer questions about the articles in the magazine. It is fun to do the quiz on our Promethean Board as a challenge to get a perfect score.
