We are asking for two outdoor benches to use as buddy benches. The buddy bench is not a new concept. It originated in Germany and was brought to the US by a student named Christian at Roundtown Elementary in York, Pennsylvania. We think it is a great idea and we would like to bring it to our school for our children to learn pro-social skills. The concept of the buddy bench is to help students who feel left out or alone. It provides them with a safe spot and a tool to use to foster friendships. During recess our students can sit on the bench when they want to make a new friend, when their friend is not at school that day, or when they want to play something different from what their friend is playing. Once a student is on the bench the other students on the playground are given an opportunity to include their classmate and spread kindness. The buddy benches provide our students a strategy to make friends independently from their teachers.
