As a Title I school, our access to materials is often limited by funding. It is important to me that my scientists are able to learn in a classroom that is not just abstract. Labs provide us with hands-on opportunities to learn about rigorous scientific topics while building a classroom community that extends learning and works in groups. To have successful labs that teach students about the properties and phases of matter, it is important to have the basics. Scientists in labs across the globe have to use measuring tools to properly carry out experiments and create new knowledge. In our classroom, we are preparing for the real world. We are preparing to become future STEM leaders. We need a triple beam balance to determine densities, to weigh materials, to create comparisons, and to draw conclusions. Graduated cylinders allow us to do many of those same things. We practice measurements, we practice determining densities of irregular objects, and we practice drawing conclusions. Lab goggles are a must for any classroom that desires to push the boundaries of classroom science into meaningful experiments. Although these are just the basics to a meaningful, rigorous scientific experience, they are important materials to my classroom and my students.
