Given the uncertain political climate we currently live in, I have found my students to be most engaged in reading when we discuss “what if” scenarios—exploring the possibilities presented by human nature in society. They love post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction, but we have few books in the genre that have enough copies for a grade-level novel study. I am seeking assistance in acquiring more books to keep my 8th graders engaged in reading. The novel Z for Zachariah is a great example of post-apocalyptic fiction that is suitable for my students’ age and reading level. The novel presents great opportunities to explore the reliability of the narrator and do in-depth character studies. Studying this novel as a class also opens up lots of opportunities for fun, engaging “outside the box” projects to go along with the reading.
