Reading, hands-on experiences and practice are so important in teaching my students about the world around them. The books, such as 'A Trip to the Dentist', will help students understand how to use community resources. The pretend cash register will help us work on buying and counting money. In addition, items such as the chart paper and white boards will help the students learn how to make lists for the grocery store so they can purchase items they need to make food. The games such as dominoes and the playdough will help build the students reading skills so they can increase their sight word reading levels to read important materials such as job applications and cooking recipes. By reading and exploring activities in our daily lives, students will be learning how to take care of themselves through shopping, cleaning and using community resources. My students will learning basic math and reading skills in order to support themselves after they leave the school environment. It is so important for them to understand even the most basic skills in order for them to become as independent as possible. These resources would help them learn and discover the people that can help them in the community and how they use their tools and skills to further their vocational careers.
