Having a science center is imperative when students are young. Hands-on activities that engage each learner and child will enable them to ask questions and find answers and build the knowledge they need to succeed in not only school, but life. I would like to build a better science center and rebuild my classroom to help each student be more engaged. Using literature and inquiry in a science center will make a First Grade classroom more lively and fun. We would read about rocks, minerals, and fossils and then go in search outside to fund examples. After observing a mealworm life cycle, the life cycle puzzles set will help students make connections to other life cycles. We do a garden in the spring and to make our own compost and see how compost is formed will help students compare which soil is better for growing vegetables. With an ant farm, students will be able to observe how ants behave in their habitat and how they work as a team. Using magnifying glasses, will help students see details much better. They can then use the construction paper to create their own ant farm. The engineering set will give students an opportunity to do more critical thinking and problem solving skills. Weekly, students will have an opportunity to use these tools independently and guided learning. Museums and science centers in our area are not easily accessible, therefore bringing the science center to them will benefit the children.
