The ninth-grade students at my school are learning about climate and climate change. The new Minnesota Science Standards (to be implemented in 2022) include five big standards and one of them is about designing solutions to the climate crisis. With the help of funding through this project, I'll be creating an integrated STEM unit that motivates students to design solutions and get them excited for renewable energy careers Throughout this unit, students will learn about electricity and design energy grids for small cities using wind turbines and solar cells. Their goal will be to maximize the amount of electricity generated based on the design of their wind turbine blades and the positioning of their solar panels. In addition, our other integrated STEM units use glue guns to construct arenas where they will use small Sphero robots to demonstrate their knowledge of Newton's laws of motion as they design IRL video games.
