This novel will allow students to see themselves reflected in literature. Through a comprehensive unit on civil rights and race, students will read the novel in tandem with news articles, podcasts, and poetry. The goal is to engage students in conversations around issues that are complex, timely and relevant. It is my hope that this unit empowers students to recognize how powerful our voices are and to encourage them to find their own. Additionally, I have many reluctant readers in my classes. By reading texts that are high interest and meaningful to their own lives I aim to promote reading both with purpose and for enjoyment.
