The library at our Middle School has recently undergone a complete remodel, which included the implementation of a MakerSpace. A MakerSpace is a separate area or space located within a school, library, or other public area designated specially for collaboration, creation, tinkering, and making, either with or without technology. Our space will have some high tech and some low tech activities including a 3D printer, a lego wall, origami, and knitting. Many students at our school will likely not have the opportunity to leave our geographic area physically, but with this gift of Google Expeditions, these students will be able to travel on digital field trips to over 200 places virtually. While is it easy to imagine the educational value of visiting the Ancient Roman ruins, and quite possible with this system, taking a detailed tour inside the human digestive tract is equally invaluable to a student's learning. This is just a sample of the multiple Virtual Reality curricular opportunities available through this system. The number of goggles in the kit will allow teachers to bring a small groups to the MakerSpace and conduct a field trip that coincides with his or her current curriculum. The subsequent projects and other classroom applications that correlate with area content standards are endless. I believe that Augmented Reality, and these devices specifically, could be an absolute game-changer for students who have a negative opinion of school. This will provide a healthy, educational "escape."
