Standards in English are constantly changing, but one constant the past few years has been the power of student choice. Literature circles allow my students to choose a text they'll enjoy, and increase their love for reading. They are also an excellent opportunity to foster group work skills, communication, and bonding through literature. My students are beginning to love reading, and I want to help them continue on that path. The Outsiders is an overwhelming student favorite, with its relevant themes that stand the test of time. Carrying the themes of friendship, family, and being an outsider into our next unit will help them continue enjoying the novel. These literature circle picks capitalize on those themes, and allow for my students the choice of how they explore these powerful ideas.
