Flexible seating gives students choice and allows them to take charge of their learning. In our classroom, we work with students who have intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism, ADHD, and specific learning disabilities in reading and math. With our wide variety of scholars that we service, we would like to give them choice, so that they can sit in a comfortable spot that best supports their learning style. Also, for our students on Behavior Intervention Plans, giving them choice is very important because it gives them buy in. In our classroom, we give instruction to two self contained scholars, we pull groups for resource instruction, and give Content Mastery instruction. There are three of us teachers in this space. Right now, students either sit crammed at a table in a standard chair or on our plastic woven rug with a clipboard. In our classroom, we don’t have enough space to add another big table. The rocker chairs and lap desks will give our scholars comfortable options and provide more work spaces so we can accommodate more scholars at a time. I hope that flexible seating will encourage my scholars’ learning and help them grow into the future leaders I know they can be.
