Many of my students have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder or ADHD. They often have difficulty regulating themselves in the classroom and understanding perspectives of others. The books and photo cards I have selected support development of theory of mind and serve to build empathy and problem-solving skills in all of my students. The Mo Willems books are often relatable to my students who live in an urban city, like many of Willems' characters. His sense of humor appeals to all of my students, regardless of their cultural or linguistic background! The Shel Silverstein poetry collection will allow them to practice thinking more abstractly and to understand figurative language in a playful way. A weighted lap pad would help many of my students feel regulated and ready to learn in class. It helps them understand their own boundaries and boundaries of others.
