Every day students come to school with worldly problems weighing them down. They are so young and inexperienced to handle what is thrown at them. Sometimes these frustrations manifest as anxiety, depression, or anger. Imagine sitting in a room trying to learn your multiplication facts but not being able to get your mind off of the argument your parents had this morning. A mindfulness classroom helps the counselor utilize a resource that has been proven to reduce stress, lower anxiety, and re-engage the student back to the classroom. This mindfulness classroom is set up to allow students to remove themselves from feelings that are overpowering to feelings of regaining control. To allow for a calming atmosphere, we need to have a space that supports calming tones. Students will utilize the floor lamps rather than overhead lights to offset the glare of florescent bulbs. Meditation pillows allow the students to sit comfortably on a soft texture to allow the body to relax. Exercise balls allow the students to provide an alternative seating based on their preference when engaged in calming interventions. The sand table allows students a tangible manipulative while engaged in listening or talking about their feelings. The garden tool set allows students to use items to manipulate the sand table. Stress balls and bubble manipulative allow students to release pent up frustrations or feelings of anxiety in a safe manner. The sound machine provides a calming background to block out the external audio attacks from hallways and classrooms giving the student a sense of peace. Finally, the mindfulness game is an engaging tool that helps students learn how to utilize coping skills for life skills in life.
