Various cadet led tasks are accomplished daily to include uniform inspection on Thursdays, physical fitness on Fridays, and core values and attendance daily to name just a few. Additionally, cadets are required to complete at least one hour of community service each month; however, many will complete many more than the required number. As with any organization, school or unit, there must be a means to accurately measure performance. Especially in a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp (military) unit, a way to determine who to promote to the highest ranks to lead the unit is a must. This measure of performance should not only be assessed on classroom grades, but unit participation and performance as well. Today, our high school students are comfortable using technology such as cell phones and tablets with built-in applications. However, since joining this unit as an instructor, I have seen students use clip boards and printed spreadsheet to accomplish these tasks. But why are they not using technology, such as iPads, they know and understand? Providing the right technology will make all the difference to this unit for not only performance, but morale as well.
