I teach a racially, religiously and economically diverse group of grade 9-12 students in a charter that focuses on arts and media. Our goal is to create global, empathetic critical thinkers and through our COMMUNICATION projects, we not only achieve this, but build upon our culture and community in the process. Our students access, analyze, interpret, evaluate and create all types of media messages and persuade and demonstrate learning through film making, animation, spoken word and public speaking. My students express themselves through dance, music, theater and media production and are engaged in ongoing social action projects. Students also work on my professional productions and we have several films coming out and are working with Academy and Emmy Award Winning actors, producers and directors. Up until this point, our equipment has been funded only by myself and my students. We are reaching out for the first time to complete projects around conflict resolution and tolerance.
