The puzzles for this project will help my students develop the foundational phonics skills they need to be successful readers. These puzzles provide hands-on learning opportunities for students to break apart and build words, focusing on letter sounds and blends. These puzzles will make word work fun and promote literacy skills that engage and excite early readers! My students love reading centers because they get the opportunity to independently explore different components of literacy. During centers, students rotate through a variety of activities. They read aloud at my table, practice writing at their desk, engage with technology, and select a word work activity to complete with a partner. In order to encourage their natural curiosity and excitement, they need to engage in novel learning experiences. Therefore, it is vital that I have a variety of word work options available to students. The items in my cart include a digraph puzzle that reinforces commonly used consonant blends (th, sh, br, and more), a sound-it-out puzzle for blending words, and a decoding puzzle for two-syllable words. I also selected a comprehension activity that requires students to read a short fiction or non-fiction text and and answer different text-based questions. I am so excited to introduce new activities to our center rotations. I am confident this project will help build the skills and confidence my students need on their journey to becoming independent readers.
