During my first year of teaching, a colleague asked me, "Realistically, in our daily lives, when are we ever told to sit on a chair and be quiet?" We shared a few answers as jokes, but that moment transformed my preferred classroom layout. I reevaluated my room. There was just too much furniture! After pushing some of it out (including my desk!) and opening up some floor space, I started giving my students more opportunities to work in a place they felt most comfortable in. In today's classrooms, something as simple as sitting on the floor instead of a chair can mean the difference between a bored student and an engaged student. This is my fifth year teaching kindergarten, and each year I've seen my students benefit more and more from a multi-sensory learning environment. To put it simply, the more we're required to have our kids do, the more difficulty they have sitting still and focusing. Whether they're dancing to a sight word song, working on our carpet with a partner, or reading a book under one of our tables, my students are grateful for any opportunity they have to get out of their seats. Research into fidgets and flexible seating shows a number of benefits: increased blood and oxygen flow to the brain, increased mental alertness, strengthening of core muscles, and empowerment through having choice and control over their learning environment. I have a few flexible seating options for my students, including ottomans, scoop rockers, and a carpet, and they've all been well-received by my kindergartners! I know they'd love and appreciate having a choice during those times where they have to be at a table or desk. With your donation, they'll finally have that opportunity!
