I recently returned to the challenge that is teaching students who live in poverty. Their childhoods have been wrought with chaotic home lives and unmet needs. I started giving a piece of candy as a reward for remaining on task since focus is a challenge for them. One day, I scored a great sale - with additional coupons-on granola bars. The first time I offered those as incentives to stay on task, things changed. The way they encircled me, you would have thought I had gold in that bowl. My students were holding their points which they earned for working - even when they were too tired to try. They stood around me, anxious to get a granola bar in exchange for giving learning their best shot! The room fell silent as they opened those bars and eagerly consumed them! A sense of calm overtook the room. Soft smiles replaced the worried lines on their faces. Hunger is a motivator, but it shouldn’t have to be. Help me fuel their learning with snacks!
