When students walk into a classroom, they want to feel loved and be comfortable in that classroom. By offering different seating options, students are more excited to learn throughout the day! Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. I have chosen a variety of different seating such as wobbly seats ideal for those who like to wiggle and wobble while they work, each super-safe stool has a rounded base that allows kids a little movement while they sit—without tipping over! I also think having soft seats for the floor and bean bag seat invite students, who need that sense of comfort, feel that in the classroom. When we have Friday Reading Time, students will be able to curl up in a good book and take their brains to different places just by using our comfortable bean bags! For students who prefer to lay in the floor, the big pillows can help make that a little more comfortable and fun. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.
