Reading is by far one of the most important skills our students will ever work on. It is truly the foundation for all other learning. Roald Dahl once said, "If you are going to go anywhere in life, you must read a lot of books." One of the best ways to get students to read a lot of books is to get them hooked into a series of books. Book series allow for more complex characters and intricate plots which also help to capture our readers attention and keep them coming back for more. When students fall in love with characters and get lost in the story line of a book series, they are eager and excited to get the next one in their hands. By having more book series from different genres available in our classroom, students will be able to easily find a good fit book for their independent reading. So often do students find themselves hooked in a book and anxious to open the next one, only to find out it is no where to be found. They are typically either checked out from our library, at a different building, or we just don't have it available to our students. Kids will then quickly loose interest and disengage from their reading but, by having the entire series available at the hands of my students, they can pick up the next copy and keep their reading momentum going without skipping a beat.
