I chose a variety of science tools that students may see in a potential career. My plan is to have the students become experts in each respective field, and then present those projects to the rest of the school in our science/STEM fair. I asked for a hydroponic garden. We live in an area in which agriculture is plentiful, but food shortage is still a very real concern. Students will be able to look at alternatives to growing and harvesting crops, as well as how scientists and farmers may feed future generations. My plan for the rock tumbler and rock refill kit is to introduce the idea of geology. We will discuss different aspects of the Earth's structure, how different rock formations form, and the inherent beauty that can be found just under the surface. The DaVinci models will be used in our discussion about simple machines. My hope will be to encourage students to look at the physics around them and apply them to new inventions that are yet to be developed. I included the salt water fuel cell monster and the air power racer to start our conversation on alternative fuel sources. My hope is to encourage students to look at fuel sources that do not rely on fossil fuels. The water filtration kit will hopefully spur some discussion on the recent oil spills and the plastics that are destroying our oceans. My objective is to get students thinking about ways to clean up messes in order to preserve the oceans for future generations.
