My students, who often don't consider themselves readers, come into my room, and see books on the shelves with beautiful artwork/characters who look like them/interesting titles and are inspired to read! Despite the fact that we no longer have a full-time librarian or library at our school, I want to provide my students with exciting reading options. Giving students the chance to CHOOSE their independent reading books is powerful, however I need books that appeal to reluctant readers. I need to prove to them that they like reading by starting them out with books that grab them from page 1. Books are expensive and non-textbooks are not a priority these days. However, I would argue that helping students see that they enjoy reading for pleasure is the most important skill I can teach them. The exposure to ideas, experiences, and vocabulary are not only important social currency and not only a fun pastime, but give students access to the next rung on the socioeconomic ladder. My students need every extra boost they can get and I'd like to help them by opening up a beautiful classroom library to them.
