A dear friend of mine who was retiring from teaching last year left me with nine copies of The Journey Back, a sequel to the novel Red Kayak that my students study as a whole class. This year, after finishing Red Kayak, I mentioned to my students that I had several copies of the sequel and would check it out to anyone interested in reading it. All nine copies were gone well before the end of the day! Students loved the first book and were motivated to keep reading to see what would happen with the characters they had grown to love and hate. This gave me an idea--what if I could provide sequels to all the novels we study? Would they keep reading? Throughout the school year, my seventh grade students study several novels as a class, including Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor and The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. Both these novels have multiple sequels. My hope is that by providing these sequels to check out, more students will read for pleasure on their own time.
