These books will enhance my classroom environment by giving my students a novel that they can relate to on a personal level. So much literature that we consider "canon" completely ignores the power of the African American voice in a community and does not give my students anything they can relate to. This novel speaks on the struggle of African American teenagers and some of the hardships they face. It can open my students' eyes to the impact that they can have in a community that many of them feel has abandoned them. With this novel, my students will be able to realize their potential as a voice for their community. They are growing up in an environment that devalues their voice through low expectations and a perpetual stereotype which leaves them with nowhere to go. "The Hate U Give" will provide my students with an alternative perspective on their lives, showing them what can be accomplished through education and hard work.
