For my students' reading is a struggle. Visual aids are needed for compensation and engagement. This will help the students understand what they are reading and also give them confidence in their reading ability. Graphic Novels and comics give students with learning disabilities the visual aids needed to understand what the story is about. The colors and layout help keep these students engaged with the story and makes them excited to read. I have seen my students read more graphic novels and comic than any traditional books. I have come to keep graphic novels on my desk and my students ask to read them. I have had students who know nothing about the civil rights movement read "March" by John Lewis and ask me questions and want to learn more. If graphic novels are the way to my student's hearts and minds, then I will do my best to get more of them to foster a love of reading.
