This year, I am focusing heavily on helping my students learn how to help those in their community. For this project, I plan on partnering with our School Resource Officer to make “no sew blankets” for police officers to have in their patrol cars. These blankets will be used when helping those within their community, particularly children, who have just experienced trauma. I want my students to create something for others, while continuing to build respect for those protecting their local community. Not only will my students reach out to their community, but they will practice skills they are taught daily in their classroom. My students have a hard time following directions in order, reading instructions, or following through on a task, all due to their disabilities. They also have a hard time taking what they read and applying it to a given task. Making these blankets will allow my students to put into practice what they learn everyday at school, and use it for the good of others. They will also have a practical skill they can take with them and use outside of the classroom. My classroom goal is to make 20 blankets that we can donate to our local police department. The materials required to make them can be expensive, and that is where you come in! Donating the material needed to make the blankets would not only help my students, but everyone within our local community!
