Simple materials, such as a functioning pencil sharpener, are essential to a successful classroom experience. Larger, luxury items, like an area rug and reading lamp, help create a calm classroom environment where the students feel more comfortable to take academic risks. The students that I serve are low-income. Having little touches like a reading chair, can show them that they are more than just a test score. This reading area can also help students who need more isolation when trying something new or challenging. This reading area can help students focus by themselves and create smaller sub-communities within the classroom.
