Our school is a low-performing, inner city HS in CA. We have 4,104 students, 82% of which are on free lunch. Less than 30% go on to a 4 year college but my AP students, despite the odds, want desperately to succeed. They are primarily Latino and African American, with 6% Pacific Islander and Cambodian immigrants. Over 60% of the student live with someone other than their parents - a grandparent, auntie or in a foster home. My classroom reflects the school population but since many began as English Language Learners, it is hard for them succeed in an academically-challenging classroom without support. They are very involved in community projects and love doing hands-on lab and fieldwork - we planted 350 trees last year at a local estuary. They go out to elementary schools to do special talks on environmental topics. They are so eager for learning and their goal is to attend a 4-year college and make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others.
