Young children love to explore, and I love child-led therapy where students can explore; however, we also need structured play and my space does not lend itself to that with so many open cabinets to explore, it becomes a distraction. An organized setting where some materials are eye level and some are placed away makes for an ideal space. It keeps the area neat, tidy and organized, with some enticing materials at reach. This offers a good balance and having this balance is important for many learners. Organization also provides me, as an SLP working with young learners, easy access to our materials which creates more focus and less distraction for all. Organizing and storing engaging materials out of reach encourages initiation and promotes communication skills, which is very important. A large cabinet to store many of my materials would be ideal, but is very pricey, so I'm asking for a smaller one for my parent engagement carryover activities, which includes many binders of strategies, carryover materials and fun ways parents can practice improving communication skills at home. This will allow more space, and a more functional, organized setting were my students can learn, explore and thrive. Velcro is also helpful with materials for young learners! It helps with the upkeep of materials and ongoing visuals made for the younger students. The materials section is just that, a few great materials from lakeshore learning for my hands on learners and some great binders to collect and organize the space. Organization indeed provides a framework for student learning, it builds in an environment for positive and planned learning opportunities. I would like to build this into my space to encourage each child’s natural curiosity and desire to explore, learn and interact with the environment.
