The use of mentor texts is an important part of every writing unit. We regularly study published writing to develop an understanding of what good writing looks like within a particular genre. 8th grade students at B. G. Middle School begin their year with a unit of study on investigative journalism. Our students observe the world around them and write about social issues in newscasts and investigative reports. With your donation, students will be able to apprentice themselves to authors in four different magazines. The articles in these magazines will serve as models for students' writing; students will be able to read articles closely and study effective writing techniques that journalists use. In addition, the magazines will provide a rich source of non-fiction writing to engage students. Students will be able to work on non-fiction reading skills, develop their awareness of events and issues in the world, and craft their own stories modeled on the stories they read. Students will read articles closely to identify the 5 W's: who, what, where, when, why. And students will be able to look closely at articles to see how journalists craft beginnings, endings, use photographs and illustrations, and incorporate quotes. The content in these magazines will help my students become global citizens and gain knowledge of world events and art while becoming journalists who investigate the issues and stories that matter most to them.
