I teach many students with ADHD and other anxiety related challenges. Frequently, it is difficult, if not impossible, for these students to remain seated in class. As the day wears on, sitting at a desk can become a grueling task for these students, no matter how much they desire to comply comply with class rules. These are not "bad" kids, but they can sometimes be labeled as troublemakers when their behavior become a distraction to other students in the class. On top of that, many are still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and any comfort we can offer at school helps their development in not only school but beyond. In the past, I have seen other schools achieve spectacular success with standing desks to promote the movement and focus of students who need unique arrangements to learn. It has a large writing surface so that students can easily maintain their supplies within reach. It has a fully adjustable height so that the desk can be adjusted for the height of the student or fully lowered to used with a chair if the student assigned to the desk needs to sit that day. This particular desk also has a swinging bar that students can use as a fidget bar/item. They put their foot on the bar and can quietly release some of their energy without drawing attention to themselves. I want to give my students every opportunity for success, especially with some still being displaced from Harvey. To that end, these desks will provide a unique opportunity for students each day to get out of their seat, participate fully in class in a positive and constructive manner and find an outlet and comfort within their day.
