What was your favorite past time as a child? Did you wait on baited breath for the minute hand to strike the time when your favorite show was on? Oh the joy! Many of us remember the joys of youth were often noisy and rambunctious. Until it became too loud for others to complete their tasks and we were then asked to turn it down. Or in reverse trying to concentrate while a loved one enjoys a noisy activity can be maddening! Our students have similar experiences. However, you can help this generation prosper through a simple device- earphones. Students have been raised in a technology-driven world, so educators must integrate technology in the classroom for student success. So how do we bridge the gap for student success? Earphones are your answer! How will we use our earphones -Here is one example: My classroom is 1-to-1 with Chromebooks. By allowing each student to have a pair of headphones we can incorporate more learning opportunities for each student. Some lessons may require them to watch a video and take notes or respond in writing. Some students can use a program like Mission US to help them determine personal motivations in the American Revolution. Perhaps even learn the English language. Other students enjoy listening to books being read on Myon.com. The possibilities would be endless if each student had a set of headphones. Never being asked to turn it down and while staying with friends actually draws our students closer as a community all while letting them experience personalized lessons. My students learning the English language can hear the language being spoken to them, my students with learning disabilities can have things read to them, the options are endless. Headphones are childhood education enhanced through technology.
