I've chosen these 5 books: The Glass Castle, North of Normal, The Liars' Club, Running with Scissors, and Take This Man- to create literature circles with my senior class. These books will be used in our classroom for many years to come to examine themes that are always relevant to students' lives, even after graduation. Survival, family, loyalty-all themes that are present throughout these books and in our students' lives in one way or another, and just like in these books, each person tackles their problems in a different way. Each group of students will be reading one of the books (ideally the one they're most interested in) and will be having a student-led literature circle while they read their book. Throughout this process they will have student-led: discussions, quote analysis, connections to their own lives/the world, as well as a large class discussion where each group gets to recap their book and share their highlights of it in a panel like forum. The final project will be one that links their book to their own lives, and also one that helps inform people about why we read memoirs.
