We read with students during our office hour period. Students are allowed to select a book of their choice to read independently. Although students in my class were so engaged in the novel "A Child Called It" by Dave Pelzer that we ended up reading it together and getting in heated discussions. We want to get the next novel in the series "The Lost Boy" to read together as a class. Our project will engage students in a text we already know they will love and help them reach their "words read" goal, which is a data point we track as a school to make sure students are reading and reading a lot!
